«...I never heard that Picasso was really good because he was painting like Kandinsky...» At Guimarães Jazz Festival 2002 you played (very well) with Peter Erskine trio. Are you old friends and jazz companions? I met Peter Erskine I think the first time with the band Best Desire, long time ago we were friends, and then in the 96-97 we started to play in trio, we did 2 different tours in Italy and Scandinavia How did you discover jazz music? I discovered jazz by coincidence, I started to play classical music but, I never really like to read music. I always liked to play piano improvising, even if I love classical music, Bach, Chopin, and Satie, Ravel, Debussy, etc... My first jazz album has been Monk ‘Criss Cross’, and then Bill Evans, Coltrane, but also different Indian music, brasilian, african, all the music that has the same point improvising Are there - in Italy - many female jazz musicians? Piano players? In Italy there are not so many female piano players, but now there are coming more as I know 2 piano players and 1 saxophone player, different styles Do you play in Italy and abroad? Yes I do play with different bands, so I play in Italy but also a lot in Europe, especially with Dewey Redman quartet I play in his band already 11 years, and different bands in France, Scandinavia How is the Italian jazz scene? The scene in Italy is really good there are a lot of good musicians, and also quite a lot of clubs and festivals, I personally play more in Europe, I don’t know why, maybe because I am a girl!!!! Is Sicilian jazz different from the one played in Milan and Toscania? Of course like in all the place, I found different people with different taste, is more or less the same in all Italy, I can say that in Reggio Emília festival were they are use to organize more original music the people is more educated for different moods, but I also think that if you play in the honest way ,what I mean is that is coming from your soul, the people received the message, it doesn’t matter if is bop or melodic, or more free music, what I really thing is that music as different road, like life, spiritual, virtuoso, or poetic, melodic is combinations of moment of life, the important is to be yourself and not be somebody else, like unfortunately in jazz happen a lot, I have the impression some time that if we don’t sound like... somebody else, Coltrane, Jarret, etc... we cant play, i never heard that Picasso was really good because was painting like Kandinsky and etc... Which style of jazz do you prefer? As I mention before I like many different music, not only jazz, improvising is the common denominator, but also classical and pop, all the music that has researching... Which were your main influences on jazz piano playing? The pianist I love them all for the same point all of the one that speak their own language are unique!! T. Monk, Stev Khun, Hancock, M.Coy, just to mention a few Do you also play classical music? Which is your repertoire? I never perform classical music, just study Have you ever played in USA? I did play in USA in the 89-90 I was playing at that time with Billy Cobham band so with him and other black musicians they are really good How about your discography? I did many different collaborations, they are too many, but you can find in internet my biography with more details Let’s keep in touch and I will send you my new CD. All the best Rita
