Why do you call your trio «Bandwagon» and why do you start your concerts with a DJ recording? It is a diferent way of introduction. I like to come on stage with the band, and then have something to entertain the audience while we get situated on the stage. It is also a very hip-hop thing to do, sampling everything to create something unique for my band. Is Thelonious Monk your main jazz mentor? Yes, he was the first pianist that introduced me to jazz. The greatest in my opinion. He is who i wanted to be like when i first began jazz. Being different from other jazz composers. Is that your goal? No, my goal isn’t to be different. I AM different from everyone else, so therefore my music should be also. Do you feel your compositions and way of playing have any similitudes with D.D.Jackson and Matthew Shipp ones? DD and Matthew do other things that i do not do, so in a way no, but in the attitude, maybe yes. Is jazz a constructive or destructive way of playing? I don’t really understand that question. Creative music is always constructive. What are your plans for the future? Does it appeal to you to form a Big Band to play your music and arrangements? I have just finished recording a live CD at the Village Vanguard. It will be out at the end of the summer. I do not have any plans to form a larger ensembe just yet. If i did, it would be with singers. Does black american popular music influence your music in any way? It is a part of who i am, so it is in the fabric of my music. It is just as important as any Monk, or Coltrane record. Staying current is not an option, it’s a necessity. How come Horácio Tavares da Silva (Horace Silver) tunes, son of a capeverdean, appear in your repertoire? I have alway loved his compositions. I once wanted to do an all Horace Silver record. But that was before i discovered who i was. I love his style, his left hand rumbles, and his compositions.
