You started by first studying bass clarinet. Why did you change to piano? i started on piano when i was 5 - i played bass clarinet for a couple years when i was 16 to 18 but piano has always been my main instrument and my passion.

Were the first works you had with pianist Ran Blake important for the way you play nowadays? i think i heard the album he did with singer jean lee who was one of jazzs all time great singers. i always liked the idea that runs love for film influenced his music and he projected a lot of the images from films in his subconscious mind to the way he constructs his sound world on the piano.

In 1984 when you moved to NYC who did you choose for sidemen? Why? when i moved to new york in 1984 i started playing with altoist rob brown who i knew from boston- we had been playing and developing a music together there and moved to new york at the same time and continued our work here.

Some people think your physical style on stage is like 'swimming in the piano'! Any comments? swiming in the piano is a good metaphor - i try to get lost and overtaken by the energy line of the piano and disappear inside of it and become part of it - if you cut my brain open a piano would pop out.

Do you prefer to play solo or with a combo? i prefer playing in trios or quartets to solo because it is easier and less work than solo even though solo has its own rewards.

Which are the reasons why you accepted to work for a north american record label as a producer and adviser? being able to work for a record label in the position that i work for thirsty ear has given me a chance to redefine my position in the music and the music business and given me a chance to reinvent myself.

Do you agree that contemporary free jazz should be called 'free revival'? i feel completely beyond labels like jazz or free jazz- i feel what i do is just music and people can label it however they want to.

Which are the differences of David S. Ware contemporary music - with whom you played - and the free jazz of the 60's? wares music is a lot different than 60s free jazz because it is being played in the 21st century and the players in the band including myself have styles that are relevant to today.

Do you mind if people say your Music is jazz? i do not concern myself with labels i just keep trying to refine my own music which is a synthesis of all that i am.

 Do you feel you are member of a new generation that plays a new jazz? there are a lot of great creative musicians on the planet pursuing there own voice in there own music- i feel both connected to them and isolated at the same time.

Is or was Cecil Taylor a strong influence on you? the content of cecil taylor is not a big influence on me but he was an influence in the sense that he let you know that you could go after your own voice in the music and you could come up with other orders for improvisation other than bebop chord changes.

Any near future plans for concerts, CD, festivals? the big event in my future is my new cd ''harmony and abyss'' coming out september 28 in america.
