William Parker's Trail of Tears Continuum (1492-2019) March 7, 8:00pm The Kitchen 512 West 19th Street | | | Bassist / composer William Parker premieres Trail of Tears Continuum (1492-2019) a new multi-media work tracing the de-evolution of humanity in America. The 90 minute suite is broken into four sections “Plantations,” “Reservations,” “Housing Projects,” Prisons” and built around new music, libretto, and narrative composed by Parker. Performers include singers AnnMarie Sandy and Raina Sokolov Gonzalez, drummer Hamid Drake, pianist Cooper-Moore, saxophonist Rob Brown, trombonist Steve Swell, and features original poetry by Fred Moten and Tracie Morris. The piece also features film by Parker and Michael Lucio-Sternbach. | | | William Parker is a bassist, improviser, composer, writer, and educator from New York City, heralded by The Village Voice as, “the most consistently brilliant free jazz bassist of all time.” AnnMarie Sandy, mezzo-soprano, has been described as "excellent, musical," for her operatic, concert and recorded work. Raina Sokolov-Gonzalez is a New York-based alternative R&B/Soul artist, featured on William Parker's recent Voices Fall From the Sky box set. Fred Moten teaches courses and conducts research in black studies, performance studies, poetics and critical theory. His poetry collection The Feel Trio was a 2014 National Book Award finalist. Tracie Morris is a poet and vocalist who transforms and complicates the subjects of abuse, power, and the body through repetition and accretive adjustments or substitutions, creating an intimate, dynamic space for readers and listeners. Cooper-Moore, 2016 Vision Festival honoree, is a pianist and instrument builder who has been a major catalyst in the world of creative music for over 40 years. Hamid Drake is widely regarded as one of the best drummers/percussionists in improvised music, he has worked with William Parker since the early 90s. Rob Brown is a phenomenal improviser on the alto saxophone, and has worked as a member of William Parker's ensembles for over 30 years. Steve Swell has been an active trombonist in the NYC improvising community since 1975, workeing extensively with Lionel Hampton, Anthony Braxton, William Parker and more. | | | March 7-9 The Kitchen, 512 West 19 St Arts for Art collaborates with the Kitchen to present Identity: Freedom, a series of new interdisciplinary work by William Parker, Dave Burrell, and Andrew Cyrille. | | | | |
