JD – gosta mais de acompanhar vozes ou instrumentais?

 

AM - I enjoy working with both. I’ve been influenced by many singers: Shirley Horn, Nancy Wilson, Andy Bey, Betty Carter, Louis, Billie, Sarah, Carmen, Nat Cole, Sinatra, Hartman, Theo Blekman, Bennett, etc. The way they phrase, the lyrical content, influenced my playing. In working with any vocalist, you have to be as supportive as possible. You want the song to ring true. And there are never any limitations.  It’s the same as playing in an instrumental group. But I think that the brain functions differently in this context.The speed of the interaction and communication is faster.There is more real time data crunching involved. Oliver Sachs should do a study of musicians who improvise. As Duke said: “There are two kinds of music: good and bad.”

 

JD – na História do jazz quem para si são os melhores?

 

AM - If I could write a book of names of the greatest jazz musicians, it would run a thousand pages. We all know the great visionaries in the history of this music. But I find it difficult to not include all the great musicians performing today. They are my inspiration. And the directions are constantly shifting. In art, there is no “best”.

 

JD – entre blues e standards que prefere tocar? porquê?

 

AM - The The Mother of our music is the Blues. I will always call a blues in my bands. There is so much material to explore in 12 bars. It’s endless. I have a deep love of standards. As they say: “they’re priceless.”

 

 JD – Quem é Anthony Moreno?

 

AM - Born in Manhattan, New York City March 13th 1956. I am 58 years old.

 

JD –Qual o início de sua carreira?

 

AM - I started studying piano at age 3 and later switched to drums at age 10. My first teacher was Stan Koor. My second teacher was Elvin Jones from home I received my first drum set. I also was studying concurrently with Al Heath Freddy Waits and Art Blakey. I continued my studies at New York University and the Manhattan School of Music.

 

JD – Com quem e onde se estreou?

AM - My first professional gig in New York City was at the age of 12 years old at the West End Café.

 

JD – Qual a sua discografia?

JD – Trabalhar em NY cumo músico jazz é difícil?

 

AM -  Work in New York has different angles and perspectives. It depends if you are working as a bandleader or as a side man. You have to do both to survive.

 

JD – Quanto ganha um músico jazz em NY?


AM - The dollar amount paid in clubs depends on the club, the group, how many days you are playing and logistics. There is no fixed amount.

 

JD – Mas uma média de dólares por dia…

 

AM -  Again, it depends if you are a bandleader or side man. I recently did a concert of my quintet that you can see on YouTube. Because everything was based on ticket sales, I would not find out the final amount until the end of the concert. I also produced a high definition video as well as mixed and mastered audio tracks for free downloads. After everything was said and done, I lost $2000. But you have to look at it as an investment in the music.
Of course concerts pay much better than clubs.

JD – que conhece da Música de Portugal?

 

AM - I have listened and studied to music from Portugal. In terms of traditional music, the folk music from Tras-os-Montes, danca dos paulitos, the music from ranchos folcloricos, Fado, Amalia Rodrigues, Misia, Jose Afonso, Fausto, Teresa Silva Carvalho, Gaiteiros de Lisboa, and many other great musicians. Also, my good friend Ze Eduardo. Also, there is great support for improvised music in Portugal. We are all lucky to have a label such as Clean Feed. A fearless record label that is commited to presenting many innovative musicians.
